Rules of the Inn 1786

Rules of the Inn from 1786 – I saw this in a pub in Northumberland and it made me chuckle. I might have to put it up in the house to remind my mates how to behave.

No skulking loafers or flea-bitten tramps! That means you.

Same Same

Ah, "same same, (but different)." One of those unique Thai phrases that are only in English (there is no equivalent in Thai), but isn’t an English phrase outside of Thailand. It is an exclusive Thai slang phrase, only it isn’t in Thai at all. Everyone uses it, from the Taxi driver who barely speaks to you, to our tour guide in the mountains who spoke excellent English. There are a number of other key Thai-English Phrases that make any Thai person smile if you drop, such as "small but spicy" (refering to Thai peanuts, and also to Thai…men…) . Same-Same, but different, is such a popular phrase that you find it on T-shirts, and as you see here, it’s the name of a couple of guest houses. Guest Houses, for those who don’t know, are like hotels but not quite. Same same, but different, you know?
